Where to play

Where can you play Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen?

FireRed and LeafGreen are available as standalone digital releases on Switch and playable on Switch 2. Original Game Boy Advance cartridges remain a separate way to play the 2004 releases.

Switch releases are individual purchases

Nintendo offers each game separately through Nintendo eShop. Its FAQ says these releases do not require Nintendo Switch Online to purchase or play and are not part of the GBA Nintendo Classics subscription collection.

Check the language before completing a purchase. The Americas releases are separate language versions rather than a single copy with an in-game language selector. Nintendo lists English, European French and European Spanish for the Americas.

Trading uses local wireless

The rereleases adapt the old link features to built-in local wireless. The FAQ explicitly says online play is not supported. GameChat on Switch 2 does not turn a local-only trade into internet trading.

If your reason for buying is playing with a distant friend, check that distinction first. Both players need a compatible setup for the actual local feature they intend to use.

What about HOME?

Nintendo’s current FAQ says the Switch releases can transfer Pokémon to HOME after HOME is updated to version 4.1.0 or later. Check your installed version before starting. This connection applies to the Switch downloads; owning an original GBA cartridge does not give it the same direct connection. Pokémon’s announcement describes a one-way transfer out of these games.

Original cartridges have different requirements

A GBA cartridge needs compatible cartridge hardware. It does not become an eShop entitlement, and the Switch purchase does not include a physical GBA cartridge. Save formats and connection options should be checked separately when moving between original hardware and other setups.

For a straightforward modern starting point, the standalone Switch release is the relevant official listing. Check the exact title, language and local multiplayer expectations rather than relying on a generic “classic Pokémon” bundle description.
