Base-game compatibility comes first
Nintendo explains that Switch 2 can play compatible Switch software, but hardware differences mean some games or features may have limitations. Check the title-level compatibility information before buying a system for one particular feature.
A Switch 2-exclusive game works in the opposite direction differently: it does not become playable on original Switch just because both systems use game cards. Read the platform label on the product listing.
Save transfer is separate from HOME
A system transfer can move supported user data and settings. Pokémon HOME moves eligible Pokémon through its supported connections. It does not replace your whole story save, badges or local progress.
Before transferring, follow Nintendo’s preparation instructions and inspect game-specific save restrictions. Keep the original system available until the supported process is complete and the results are checked.
Paid upgrades are not the same as compatibility
A compatible Switch game may run on Switch 2 without a paid upgrade. A Switch 2 Edition can offer additional features or improvements and may require an upgrade pack. A free update is another possibility. Check the exact game’s offering rather than paying solely because the new console exists.
Controllers and special features deserve a check
Nintendo describes support for some existing Switch controllers, but charging, pairing, play modes and accessories can differ. A feature tied to specific hardware should be checked separately from the base game’s ability to start.
Use the compatibility source below as a current reference. If an update changes a title’s status, the weekly editorial review should revise this guide and the platform finder together so they do not contradict each other.
