Learn to observe before rushing in
Wild Pokémon respond differently to your presence. Some are easy to approach; others flee or attack. Watch the target and the surroundings before throwing. Tall grass, distraction and a safer angle can make an encounter easier than immediately starting a battle.
Your trainer can take damage in the field, so awareness matters outside the battle screen. Keep a route back to safety and avoid turning a difficult catch into a chase through several aggressive Pokémon.
Use the base camp as a working stop
Check your party, rest when needed and replenish useful supplies. Gather materials during ordinary exploration so crafting does not become an emergency task after the last ball is gone.
Complete research goals deliberately. Catching one Pokémon is not always the same as completing its Pokédex entry. Open the entry and choose tasks that suit the area you are already exploring.
Catching and battling support each other
You can catch some targets directly in the field. Others are easier or necessary to handle through battle. Learn both approaches rather than assuming every encounter should be solved the way a traditional route battle works.
Battle action order also differs from the usual one-move-per-side expectation. Read the displayed order, especially when using Agile or Strong Style. A stronger hit can leave the opponent room for another action.
Know when to return
A successful expedition does not have to reach the farthest visible landmark. Returning with completed research and an intact supply of useful catches is progress. Report your findings and prepare for the next trip rather than gambling everything on one more aggressive target.
This opening guide avoids plot details. The linked catching, research and style guides explain the main systems separately so you can look up the problem you are facing without reading ahead through the story.
