Read the encounter before throwing
A calm target, a fleeing target and an aggressive target need different approaches. Watch whether it has noticed you and whether the area has other threats. A clear throwing lane is useful only if the Pokémon stays in it.
Use the game’s aiming and focus controls to understand the target, then approach at a sensible distance. Throwing from too far away with the wrong ball can waste supplies even if the aim looks close.
Make the approach easier
Grass can conceal your position, food can distract a suitable target and an unexpected throw can improve your opportunity. These are field tools, not guaranteed catches. Some targets require a different response once they become alert.
Ball families serve different throwing situations. Read their descriptions and practice them on familiar targets before spending them on a rare encounter. A ball intended for a close approach is not interchangeable with a long-distance option.
When to start a battle
If the target is resisting a direct approach, consider sending out a party Pokémon using the appropriate control. In battle, reduce the target’s HP carefully and apply useful conditions where possible.
Do not confuse the control for throwing an empty catching ball with the control for sending out your own Pokémon. Check the selected item or Pokémon before releasing the throw.
Keep the trainer safe
An aggressive group can damage you while you are concentrating on one catch. Move away, break pursuit or return to camp when needed. Inventory management and an exit route are part of the catching plan.
After a successful catch, inspect the Pokédex tasks. You may be able to finish useful research with a few different approaches instead of repeating one action without checking the requirement.
The official Nintendo guide linked below demonstrates the distinction between direct field catching and battling. These instructions are for Legends: Arceus, not the different catching controls in Let’s Go or GO.
