Start with the evolution method
Leveling up is only one method. Some Pokémon use stones or other items, some evolve after a trade, and others need friendship, a particular move, a location or time condition. A regional form can have a different evolution from another form of the same species.
If an item is involved, check whether it must be used directly, held during a trade or used while another condition is satisfied. Simply placing an evolution stone in the bag does not trigger an evolution.
A useful troubleshooting order
- Confirm the species and form from the summary screen.
- Check the method for the game you are actually playing.
- Look for any required time, location, move, party member or item.
- Check for an Everstone or a canceled evolution.
- Meet the condition again, including gaining another level if that method requires it.
Some Pokémon do not evolve, and some evolutions were introduced after the original game in which you caught the species. A modern Pokédex showing an evolution does not mean that evolution exists in an older title.
Why guides sometimes disagree
Legends: Arceus changes how certain evolutions are triggered and offers alternatives for some trade evolutions. GO replaces many console conditions with Candy costs and visible tasks. A method copied from either game can be wrong for a traditional RPG.
If an evolution changes when a move can be learned in your game, check the move reminder and level-up list before making an irreversible choice. There is no single rule that evolving early always loses moves or that delaying is always better.
