How do friendship evolutions work?

Friendship is not the level number

A Pokémon can be high level without meeting its friendship requirement. Conversely, a recently caught Pokémon can gain friendship through supported activities before it is ready to evolve. The game may offer a friendship checker, but its dialogue is often a range rather than an exact number.

Time conditions matter. If an evolution requires friendship during the day, meeting the friendship threshold at night is not enough. Check whether the title uses a real-world clock or its own in-game time cycle.

Make the process deliberate

Keep the Pokémon in your party, use the game’s friendship-building activities and avoid repeatedly letting it faint. If an appropriate held item or other friendship aid is available, check how it works in that title. Items and activities introduced in a later generation will not help in an older game.

Once the requirement appears satisfied, trigger the actual evolution method. In a conventional game that may mean leveling up again. In Legends: Arceus, a ready Pokémon can require you to select evolution from the menu rather than waiting for an automatic sequence.

Check competing evolution conditions

Eevee is a good reason not to follow a friendship guide blindly. Its possible evolutions depend on the game and on additional conditions, which can include time, location or knowing a particular kind of move. A guide for one evolution should explicitly name the intended result.

Friendship, affection and GO buddy progress are related ideas but not interchangeable systems. Do not assume hearts shown in one game map to a friendship threshold in another.

If repeated levels do nothing, stop grinding and inspect the missing condition. Species, form, time and move requirements are faster things to verify than gaining another ten levels without changing the setup.
