How do trade evolutions work in Pokémon?

Some Pokémon evolve when traded, sometimes while holding a specific item. The required trade and item depend on the species and game, and Pokémon HOME storage is not a substitute for an in-game evolution trade.

Agree on the trade before starting

If you want your original Pokémon returned, say so before sending it. Confirm which species and held item are required, and make sure both players can connect using the same supported trading system. Local wireless and internet trading can have different requirements.

In older hardware families, the connection method can be especially important. Owning two games does not guarantee the systems or generations can communicate directly. Moving a Pokémon through a transfer service is a different operation from trading it between two players.

A careful trade-back sequence

  1. Save and check the Pokémon’s summary, held item and nickname.
  2. Verify the evolution method for the exact game.
  3. Agree on a trade-back with a trusted partner.
  4. Complete the trade and let the recipient finish any evolution prompts.
  5. Trade it back and inspect the result before ending the session.

An Everstone can prevent some evolutions, but there are historical exceptions. Do not build a plan around a general rule without checking the species and generation.

Games with alternatives

Legends: Arceus provides item-based ways to handle familiar trade evolutions, so a live trading partner is not always needed there. In Pokémon GO, eligible traded Pokémon may have a reduced evolution cost, but GO also restricts trading a Pokémon again. That makes a console-style trade-back plan unsuitable for GO.

For Switch rereleases, read the rerelease’s connectivity rules. The current FireRed and LeafGreen Switch FAQ describes local wireless features and does not promise online trading.

If you only need the evolved species for a collection, an available wild encounter or another supported acquisition route may be simpler. Check the current game’s Pokédex and encounter options before arranging a complicated transfer chain.
