Where to play

DS vs. 3DS Pokémon games: which hardware do you need?

DS Pokémon cartridges and 3DS Pokémon cartridges are different formats. A compatible 3DS-family system can play most DS software, but an original DS or DSi cannot play 3DS games.

Identify the generation of hardware

Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Black, White and their Unova sequels belong to the DS hardware family. X, Y, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, Sun, Moon and the Ultra games belong to 3DS.

The direction of compatibility matters. “My 3DS can play a DS game” does not imply that a DS can play X or Sun. Switch and Switch 2 do not directly accept either older cartridge format.

GBA compatibility is another distinction

Original DS models with a Game Boy Advance slot can use compatible GBA cartridges. DSi and 3DS-family systems lack that slot. A used-system listing should show the exact model if your goal is playing Emerald or using an old cartridge-based migration feature.

Check region and optional features

3DS game regions and some enhanced DS software can affect import compatibility. Accessories, dual-slot functions and original online services should be checked individually. Starting the main game is not a complete test of every historical feature.

Buying for a collection

Make a list of the exact games and transfer route before buying hardware. One compatible system can cover several games, but it may not provide every connection needed to migrate Pokémon from a GBA cartridge through later generations.

The closure of new 3DS eShop purchases also means a newly obtained system cannot be assumed to have every required historical app available. Check legitimate existing access and current service notices.

Use the original manual for the controls and hardware-specific functions, then consult modern support notices for features that changed after release. Those are two different sources of truth that should be read together.
