Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl: a practical starting guide

Follow Sinnoh’s early routes, develop more than one dependable attacker and explore side systems as they unlock. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have a directed journey, so the current story objective is a useful guide.

Build around the next route

Your starter can carry the opening, but a second useful matchup makes the team less fragile. Check new catches for types and moves you do not already have. A Pokémon that handles one of the starter’s weaknesses can be worth more than another strong attacker of the same type.

Talk to characters and inspect accessible buildings as you reach towns. Progression often comes from a conversation or route event, so a closed path is not always a signal that you should keep leveling.

Prepare before leaving town

Heal, buy a reasonable supply of balls and keep condition cures available. Save before an important battle or a longer expedition. Use move descriptions and category icons when replacing attacks.

There is no need to optimize every Nature or individual stat for the first story completion. Good matchups, suitable levels and dependable moves solve more immediate problems.

Explore the Grand Underground with a purpose

The Underground provides exploration, digging and Pokémon hideaways. Try it when the game introduces the required access rather than expecting the system at the first screen of a new save.

Treat a visit as an outing: decide whether you want to mine, look for a teammate or inspect a hideaway. Keep track of where you entered and return to the surface when your supplies or time are running low.

Do not use the original games as an exact script

These remakes retain much of Sinnoh’s structure, but a guide for original Diamond, Pearl or Platinum is not guaranteed to describe the same feature set. Check that a guide explicitly covers Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl before following an item location or encounter claim.

Trading and Pokémon HOME compatibility also have specific rules. Confirm the actual destination game before moving a valuable teammate out of its save. A species existing in the national series is not proof that every Switch game accepts it.
