Choose the exact edition you want
HeartGold and SoulSilver revisit Johto, while Gold, Silver and Crystal are the earlier Game Boy-era games. They share a setting but have different hardware requirements and features. A listing for one is not a listing for all of them.
A used cartridge listing should clearly identify the title, language and condition. If a bundled accessory matters to you, confirm that it is included and that its functionality fits the system you intend to use.
DS and 3DS compatibility has limits
Compatible 3DS-family systems can play ordinary DS software, but they do not have the original DS model’s Game Boy Advance cartridge slot. Optional migration routes and accessories therefore deserve their own check.
Original online features may depend on retired services. Local play and a functioning save are separate questions from whether a historical internet event or trade feature is still available.
Emulation uses DS software
melonDS is a DS emulator, not a Switch emulator. Its setup needs a compatible game dump supplied by the user, appropriate controls and a readable two-screen layout. Follow the emulator project’s instructions for system files and save import.
Save in the game itself, close cleanly and preserve a backup before updating the emulator. Keep the game identity and region with your backup so a later import does not become guesswork.
Check future availability by title
The existence of other classic Pokémon releases on Switch does not establish that these remakes have also been rereleased. Look for an official listing naming HeartGold or SoulSilver before assuming a membership or newer console includes them.
