Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: what to do first

Finish the opening that introduces the academy and exploration, then follow nearby challenges while building a flexible team. The open map gives you freedom, but opponents are not all scaled to your level.

Treat the map as choices, not equal difficulty

Scarlet and Violet introduce several story paths around Paldea. You can choose how to explore them, but reaching a distant challenge early does not mean your current team is ready for it. If ordinary trainers or wild Pokémon suddenly outclass you, take that as information about the area.

Try a nearby Gym, Titan or Team Star objective rather than pushing through a large level gap with healing items alone. Progress on different paths can make exploration more manageable and provide reasons to return to earlier routes.

Build a small working party

Catch a few species with different matchups and inspect their move categories. Keep reliable attacks rather than replacing every move with a higher-power option that uses the wrong stat. Heal before long exploration trips and use the map’s available travel points.

Experiment with Terastallization against an opponent you already understand. Changing the type interaction in a low-pressure fight makes it easier to see what the mechanic adds.

Separate co-op from the story structure

Union Circle lets friends explore together, but it does not turn every story battle into a shared campaign encounter. Use Link Trades, Link Battles and Tera Raids for their own purposes. Local and internet connections have different setup requirements.

Delay expensive optimization

The opening hours are a good time to learn which Pokémon and playstyles you enjoy. Detailed EV spreads and high-difficulty raid builds can wait until you know the role you want to train for.

Before a difficult objective, check levels, move coverage and supplies. If the team lacks an answer to one type, a useful nearby catch can solve more than an hour of leveling the wrong matchup.

This is a spoiler-light starting route, not a claimed full walkthrough or a recommended order for every Paldea objective. The official site linked below explains the major systems and story paths.
