Pokémon TCG Pocket: collecting and your first battles

Start Pocket with its collection tutorial, then complete the battle lessons before changing decks. Pocket is a separate card game with a different deck size, Energy system and win structure from the physical Pokémon TCG.

Learn the two halves of the app

Opening packs and organizing a collection are different from building a working battle deck. A collection can contain attractive cards that do not yet form a consistent strategy. Use the tutorial and available beginner decks to learn what a turn feels like first.

The app is free to start with optional purchases. A purchase is not required to understand the basic rules, and random pack openings are not a guaranteed way to obtain one specific missing card.

Do not import physical-card assumptions

Pocket uses compact 20-card decks and an Energy Zone rather than the physical game’s ordinary 60-card deck and manual Energy-card structure. It normally uses points for Knock Outs rather than taking six physical Prize cards.

Read the app’s current battle help for exact exceptions. A recent official FAQ, for example, discusses attacks requiring no Energy; an old blanket statement about what can happen on the opening turn can miss that case.

Give the first deck one job

Choose a main attacker, include its required evolution line and make sure the Energy setup fits the attacks. Add supporting cards that help the plan happen rather than mixing every rare card you own.

Try solo practice before ranked play if you want time to read effects. After a loss, inspect whether the deck failed to draw its pieces, lacked Energy or ran into a difficult matchup. Those are different lessons.

Keep the collection decisions deliberate

Read which expansion a pack or exchange belongs to before spending resources. Pack points and Wonder Pick resources have their own rules; neither is a universal currency for every card in the app.
