Movement is part of the decision
Watch the distance between your Pokémon and its target. A move’s range and area can matter alongside its type and power. Standing still and selecting the same attack repeatedly can miss what the new system is asking you to read.
Use the game’s lock-on, movement and command prompts as they are introduced. Check which Pokémon and move are selected before committing, especially when several targets or effects are nearby.
Cooldowns replace some familiar habits
Moves have timing constraints rather than being freely selected once on every conventional turn. After using a move, watch when it becomes available again and what your opponent is doing in the meantime.
The useful comparison is between a move’s effect, reach and recovery opportunity. A powerful attack is not automatically the safest response if its timing leaves you exposed or its area does not cover the target’s position.
Matchups still help, but the format changed
Typing remains useful background. However, do not import an entire turn-based competitive set or Speed calculation and assume it predicts Z-A’s behavior. The game’s own descriptions and battle tutorials are the right reference for its specific effects.
Mega Evolution is a major part of the game’s identity. Learn its resource and activation rules in the current game rather than treating instructions from X and Y as an exact control guide.
Practice one interaction at a time
Choose a manageable encounter and compare a close-range option with a move that reaches farther. Observe positioning and availability before adding another new system. That turns a busy battle into a set of readable decisions.
