Pokémon trading cards

How do Energy cards work in Pokémon TCG?

Attached Energy satisfies attack costs. It usually stays attached after attacking unless an effect tells you to discard it, and you normally attach one Energy card from your hand per turn.

These rules apply to the physical Pokémon TCG and Pokémon TCG Live. Pokémon TCG Pocket uses a different format.

Read symbols as requirements

A colored symbol asks for the matching Energy type. A Colorless symbol can be satisfied by Energy of any type. For an attack costing one Water and one Colorless, a Water Energy plus another Energy can satisfy the requirement, provided their effects actually supply the needed Energy.

One Energy card and one unit of Energy are not always the same thing. A Special Energy card can provide multiple units or have conditions that change what it supplies. Read the card instead of counting rectangles under the Pokémon.

Attacking is not normally spending the Energy

If the attack does not tell you to discard Energy, the attached cards generally remain for future attacks. Discarding every attachment after each attack makes the game much slower and is a common first-game mistake.

Retreating is different: a normal retreat pays the printed cost by discarding appropriate attached Energy. A switching effect can follow another procedure.

Your attachment can go to the Bench

The ordinary attachment does not have to go to the Active Pokémon. Preparing a Benched attacker can be the better long-term choice if the current Active cannot survive or the next attacker needs several turns of setup.

Effects that attach extra Energy have their own text and restrictions. They do not automatically use the same once-per-turn allowance as the basic attachment from hand.

Build enough access, not just a large pile

A deck needs to find Energy when the plan requires it, but drawing too many Energy cards can leave you without Pokémon or Trainers. The right count depends on attacks, search options and recovery.

Pocket’s Energy Zone is a different system. These rules describe physical Pokémon TCG and the corresponding rules implemented in Live.
