Pokémon trading cards

What are the deck-building rules for Pokémon TCG?

An ordinary constructed Pokémon TCG deck has exactly 60 cards and normally no more than four cards with the same name, apart from Basic Energy. The chosen format adds legality restrictions.

These rules apply to the physical Pokémon TCG and Pokémon TCG Live. Pokémon TCG Pocket uses a different format.

Count names, not illustrations

Different artworks of a card do not automatically create separate copy allowances. The printed name is the starting point for the ordinary four-copy limit. Some special card categories add stricter limits, so check their text and current rules.

Include at least one Basic Pokémon so you can legally begin the game. A pile of strong Evolution cards cannot set up an opening Active Pokémon by itself.

Choose a main attacker and the cards needed to establish it. Add Trainers that help find pieces, draw cards and support the strategy. Then select an Energy count and type mix that make the attacks practical.

There is no universal rule that a deck must contain exactly twenty Pokémon, twenty Trainers and twenty Energy. That kind of even split can make a specific strategy less consistent. Let the actual plan determine the mix.

Format is an additional check

Standard rotates by regulation mark, with reprint rules and release timing also relevant. Expanded uses a wider card pool and a banned list. A deck legal for a casual kitchen-table agreement is not automatically legal at a tournament.

The 2026 rotation announcement lists H, I and J marks, plus future eligible marks, after the relevant rotation dates. Reprints can create exceptions, so inspect the current rules rather than sorting only by a set’s release year.

Limited events use different construction

Prerelease and Build & Battle formats can use smaller decks and their own rules. Do not bring a 40-card limited-event deck to an ordinary 60-card constructed match without agreeing on the format.

Pokémon TCG Pocket is a separate 20-card game. Its deck size, copy limits and Energy system are not an alternative legal configuration for the physical constructed game.
